Workplace Ethical Dilemma Paper

Workplace Ethical Dilemma Paper BSHS / 322 Marcia Winter Introduction We've all heard the golden rules: In today’s society it is hard to find a good paying job. When one finds a good paying job, that person needs to do whatever he or she can do to keep that job. Ethics can be a problem in a workplace if someone is asked to do something that they do not feel is right. â€Å"Ethics are about making choices that may not always feel good or seem like they benefit you but are the â€Å"right† choices to make† (Curry, 2011; para 2).In the following, I will discuss a workplace ethical dilemma that I have witnessed in my current employment. I will discuss the essential points of the dilemma and how this dilemma intersects with my personal values. Personal Ethics I have very simple personal ethics and values that I live by. â€Å"Don't hurt, don't steal, don't lie, or one of the most famous: â€Å"Do unto others as you would have done to you† (Curry, 2011; para 2) . I have others but these are the main ones I live by.My parents taught me early in life that if I want to do well in this world and have others respect me than I better remember these ethics and values. Workplace Ethical Dilemma I have been employed for the same medical facility for almost 2 years. I started at the hospital and have worked my way into the clinics. This is a major accomplishment because normally my job does not move their employees around. They like to keep everyone in the same place. When I transferred to my current position I was put in the position to â€Å"spy† on the current workers in the office.I kept the same boss and she knew that there were some issues at my new location. She wanted me to get the scoop on everyone and then report back to her. Now, I love my boss and my job, but she was asking me to do something that I was not ok with. I am not the type of person to gossip about people behind their backs. I like to do my job and go home. I do not wan t to talk about others because I have been on the receiving end and have been the person that others have talked about. It does not feel good. Points of Dilemma When I was asked to spy on my coworkers, I did not know what to say.I kept thinking that my boss was joking with me and was waiting for me to respond in the correct way. I felt like she was looking to see what I would do. I did not talk about it for a couple of days after she talked with me about it. I thought long and hard as to what I was going to do. I did not want to lose my job over this but I really did not want to tell on my coworkers. I did not even know them yet. I kept thinking that I could not work with people I did not trust. I knew that if someone was to spy on me, that I would never be able to trust them. Read also â€Å"Glengarry Glen Ross†Ã‚   by David MametI did not want to break that trust. When my boss approached me a second time, I knew what my answer was going to be. I told my boss that I did not feel comfortable spying on my coworkers. I was waiting for her to tell me that I did have a choice†¦. it is either your job or spy on your coworkers. She surprised me when she told me that she understood my position and respected my decision. I stood their flabbergasted because I did not know what to say. Personal Values Personally, this decision to not do what my boss told me tore at me. I have always been taught to listen to authority. My boss would be my authority. However, I was also told to treat others the same way I would like to be treated. I cannot stand it when people talk about me behind my back. I am a person who confronts problems head on. If someone has a problem with the way I do things than I would want that person to confront me and talk with me about it. I would not like them to go running to the boss and â€Å"tell† on me. I did not want my boss to be mad at me but I also do not want me coworkers mad at me. There would only be a couple of reason why I would tell on my coworkers. One would be if I witnessed one of them doing something very wrong to a patient or to another coworker. An example of this would be if one of my coworkers lied to a patient or to another coworker. This would be against my code of ethics. The other reason would be if one of my coworkers would be stealing from the company. Stealing would consist of stealing money, supplies or cheating on one’s paycheck. There are some people who are very dishonest regarding their time card. â€Å"Employee fraud is on the rise, soaring from $400 billion in lost revenue for U. S. usinesses in 1996 to over $600 billion in 2003. And while many organizations have implemented background checking as a requirement for employment, the majority of employees who steal œ68. 6 percent, according to Association of Certified Fraud Examiners –have no prior criminal record (Wolf; Para 4). Conclusion In conclusion, having good work ethics and values are extremely important. People look at those qualities just as much as they would look at qualifications. Employers want employees who are going to not only show up for work but also does quality work as well. The personal workplace dilemma that I shared is not the only personal workplace dilemma I have had. I am sure in my future I will have more. If I continue to live by my personal ethics and values than I should have no problems with my future dilemmas. The scandal led to the resignation of President Nixon and it further changed the campaign finance reform. Watergate indeed was a real threat to our democratic institutions. It destroyed the integrity of the government and greatly eroded the trust of the public. The public trust is the bedrock of democracy and without it, the institutions collapse. Public distrust of a government is a significant sign of problem in the political system. Without the people’s belief in democracy, the government will lose its legitimacy which sometimes yields to dictatorial rule. Nixon administration’s dishonesty injured the republic and weakened its people in the rest of the world. The Watergate scandal was a very serious matter that should concern the people until the end. Organization (Mod 3 SLP PoM) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Organization (Mod 3 SLP PoM) - Essay Example This essay includes three parts mainly highlighting the importance of organizing within a military contracting organization, named Northbridge Services Group. Along with this, it also includes the role played by various elements like work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, span of control and centralization or decentralization of organizing in different organizational structures. Organizing is described as a procedure which includes vivid planning and scheduling of varied ideas and information in order to reduce the negative impacts and to enhance the success of the plan or strategy like restructuring or alliance or others. The concept of organizing is used so that the plan or strategy gets accepted by all the employees thereby enhancing its scope of success (Vlasic, 2013). Thus, it is extremely essential for any organization, operating in any segment. Best practices for Organizational Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Best practices for Organizational Change - Essay Example The quantitative research on the other hand is focused on large scale surveys and research. Here the researchers can use methods like questionnaires and structured interviews (Leedy & Ormrod, 2009, p.94). This method involves gaining responses from more number of people however this is relatively a much quicker method than the qualitative research (Leedy & Ormrod, 2009, p.95). There have been a number of discussions and arguments relating to the differences among the two methods. The two methods involve a number of similar processes like the need for hypothesis and also use of literature to develop the questionnaires and the research tools (Leedy & Ormrod, 2009, p. 94). Both methods also involve the need for collection and analysis of data and each of these methods can be used either individually or combined (Leedy & Ormrod, 2009, pg. 94). The method used can provide different results for each of the methods as well as when the methods are used combined with each other. Research Proposal: Considering a research question where the researcher aims at identifying the impact of the changes in the personnel development and the training and development efforts on the employees of a particular company. Here there are basically two sets of individuals who can provide the best inputs into the question, i.e. the employers and the employees. In the case of a qualitative research method, the researcher will attempt to meet or interview the employers and managers in the company.

Argumentation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Argumentation - Research Paper Example casualties while maximizing destruction and death abroad. That Obama was elected through the use of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Jesus Christ in his moral rhetoric makes the use of violent force in government policy problematic. For example, if we are to ask whether these teachers accept the use of deadly force and violence as a means to solve political problems or social issues, the answer would be an unequivocal no – not in any instance. It can be further argued that by invoking MLK, Gandhi, his Christian faith, and his unique family history, the President communicated a point of view to the electorate that was expressive of his moral sense of identity. If Obama as President continues to pursue what the Washington Times describes as â€Å"neoconservative policies† through military action abroad, he is indeed going against the moral tone that he communicated to his base in seeking election and should be held accountable in the upcoming 2012 election for it. The Washington Times (2011) writes in the editorial: â€Å"Mr. ... For now anyway. Mr. Obama’s motive - trying to dislodge an authoritarian regime in the name of the Libyan people - are solidly within the neoconservative framework.† (Washington Times, 2011) The article is limited in space but could have clearly noted that Obama has pursued the â€Å"Just War† doctrine through his policy of escalation in Afghanistan and Pakistan while drawing down in Iraq, and Libya is the latest example of that policy. President Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech can be seen as one of the main locations where he develops the â€Å"Just War† doctrine and with it his reasons why he cannot or will not implement a purely pacifist foreign policy as advocated by Gandhi and MLK particularly. (NYT, 2009) What the Washington Times suggests is that at heart Obama is no different that Nixon or Eisenhower, who like the majority of Americans would â€Å"believe in† Christianity and not see it as inconsistent with war. Yet, t he Washington Times is not writing the editorial to advocate the position of MLK and Gandhi in politics, they are writing to exult with glee as Obama again sells these principles out and the â€Å"moral Left† writhes in agony. The implication of this tone is happier still in that the writers expect that Obama will likely lose the election, having sold out his moral base continually throughout his administration. Following the Washington Times arguments, it is easy to view the Obama administration’s economic policies as no real change from the neo-conservative Bush administration. President Obama continued the Wall St.â€Å"bailout† policies enacted by the Bush administration as well as expanding them. President Obama’s majority-led Congress extended the Bush tax cuts in another example of neo-conservative policy.

Public University Analysis (#2) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Public University Analysis (#2) - Essay Example The current trend is that the organisations only have to report their contributions but the proposal will make their financials weaker since they have to show their share of liabilities. The effect of the proposed GASB will be an increase in the pension liability for public agencies. The income that the institution receives from its activities is an economic factor that affects the organisation’s future growth and success. The higher the income obtained by an entity from its operations, the higher the growth and success of that institution. (The Times 100) The inflation rates being experienced in the economy affect the growth of the institution since inflation rates affects the price of commodities. When these rates are high it reduces the spending power of the institution since there is an increase in the prices of commodities. The recession, like the one in 2008, caused a slow rate in growth of an institution since the economy is experiencing a slump. The recession also limits the success that an organization might have due to it reporting reduced sales. (The Times 100) Interest rates increase the borrowing costs of an institution and reduce the funds that an institution might try to get from borrowing due to the high costs of borrowing. (The Times 100) High borrowing costs also limit the growth of an institution since much of the capital is borrowed and therefore no in the control of the shareholders, which is not an ideal situation. Evaluate the impact of the internet on business Essay

Evaluate the impact of the internet on business - Essay Example Internet alone has been able to change the marketing strategies of several businesses and social media is one internet outlet that has really contributed heavily towards the evolution of new marketing activities. Electronic business which is often titled as e-business is a term used to refer to the huge range of business operations that are conducted online and these activities take place between stakeholders of a business that are located within and outside the organization (Columbus, 2000, p.240). One of the first organizations to define the concept of e-business was IBM. They stated that e-business is the alteration of significant business operations with the utilization of internet (Garbade, 2011, p.20). The term is even used to refer to kind of exchange or transaction that may take place between different parties through the means of internet and is quite different as compared to the traditional way of performing business activities in which the physical presence of both the buy ers and sellers used to be required. The success of e-business and the benefits of e-business to organizations can be realized through the e-commerce sales figure of $343 billion experienced by US businesses documented during the period of 2012 by Plunkett Research (Plunkettresearch.com, 2013). The importance of use of internet in marketing activities have been recognized as Plunkett Research figured out that during the period of 2012, 24% of all marketing activities conducted by US organizations was through online channels (Plunkettresearch.com, 2013). On the other hand are those who believe that internet has negatively impacted the world of business and measures should be taken to counter these negative impacts. This writing will argue that internet has more benefits to offer than disadvantages and if used in the appropriate manner, it can help business flourish. Body E-business has assisted businesses in reaching their target market in various methods and has even assisted busine sses in increasing their market shares with limited amount of investments. According to Boone, the internet has made it possible to reach various customers in several ways that were unknown to businesses before it evolution and the main benefit that has been identified by Boone is that internet has made it possible for businesses to cater to the needs of customers throughout the world (Boone, 2012, p.105). This means that internet has eliminated boundaries that divided countries from countries and restricted businesses to cater the need of limited number of people. The opponents argue that although internet has helped businesses cross domestic boundaries and has allowed even small scale businesses to operate in the global world, this feature of internet has increased the competition for local businesses and local businesses are shutting down due to their failure to compete. In my opinion, this is not necessarily a disadvantage and is rather an advantage for local businesses and has helped them in realizing that they need to operate in a much effective and efficient manner if they have to survive the competition. Internet has even assisted organizations in decreasing their expenditure on advertisement and marketing and this feature has even lead to increase in the power of the multinational organizations. Internet based advertising and promotion is almost free of cost. Basic level internet marketing such as creation of blogs and creation of WebPages on Facebook does not cost organizations a dime. If

The Significance of the Role of Malcolm X on African American Activists Essay Example for Free

The Significance of the Role of Malcolm X on African American Activists Essay A. Plan of the Investigation To what extent was the role of Malcolm X significant in the rise of radical African American activism (1965-1968)? This investigation will assess the significance of Malcolm X’s significance in giving rise to African American activism. Malcolm X’s motives, involvement in the civil rights movement and his leadership will all be discussed in order to understand the extent of his significance. To add further understanding and provide justification a summarization of evidence will be included. Also, an evaluation of sources will allow for details which provide justification in saying that Malcolm X’s role was significant; both sources being evaluated in their origin, purpose, value and limitations. B. Summary of Evidence Malcolm X, initially born under the last name Malcolm Little in 1925. Later on life he adopted X, which became a symbol to represent his lost past, particularly the rejection of his â€Å"slave† name. Malcolm X was an activist and an outspoken public voice for the Black Muslim Faith who challenged the civil Rights movement and the non-violent pursuit of integration that was led by Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X was an activist who believed that non-violent acts would achieve nothing in receiving racial equality, he believed that people had to take action. He once said â€Å"it is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of racial attacks.† Malcolm X was so significant to the rise of radical African American activism because he is one of the two most important and influential black leaders during the late 20th century. Malcolm X rearticulated and gave African Americans clarity as to who they are, what their problems were and how to s olve them. He did this by speaking about the black radical tradition which consisted of ideology, class and culture. And he made many African Americans energized to take action. Also, Malcolm X was an advocator of black pride which led more people to follow him and his ideas. Malcolm was such a powerful leader and activist that he gave way to some black art activists, which is interesting because art was not his main focus. Malcolm wanted blacks to learn about their roots and gain and understanding of their heritage, therefore he made it a central part of the Organization of Afro-American Unity which in turn furthered radical black art activists. Malcolm X gained this desire when he partook on a journey through North Africa and the Middle East. Malcolm’s desire for wanting blacks to understand their heritage also promoted the rise of cultural nationalism within the Black Panther Party. C. Evaluation of Sources Malcolm X and the Black Arts Movement by James Smethurst was published by Cambridge University Press in the year of 2010. The purpose of this source is to demonstrate how Malcolm X was deemed such a commanding figure and brought rise to Black activists, even in the arts, a subject that Malcolm X rarely spoke about. The value of this source lies within the author’s description of how Malcolm X was a leader and how he inspired many people to rise and take a stand, especially in the arts. For example: X did not touch on the subject of arts as often as his did race in his speeches. However, some Black art activist came to see him as a commanding figure. This source is limited due to its lack of detail. This source mainly gives brief description on how Malcolm X laid the foundation for different types of Black activists but does not go in depth about what he did to influence these activists. Malcolm X: A powerful black leader who fought for human rights by Sharrod Patterson was published by the student newspaper of Winston-Salem University in the year of 2007. The purpose of this source is to identify Malcolm X’s rise to becoming a world renowned activist. The value of this source lies in the discussion of where Malcolm X started to where he ended. He started as a young boy who began to head down the wrong path, getting into drugs and involved with the wrong people but overcame that and ended up being a prominent civil rights activist. However, this source is limited due to the lack of discussion about his impact on many people and how he laid the foundation for many activist groups and organizations. D. Analysis When making the final evaluation of Malcolm X’s role of significance in bringing rise to African American activism, tow aspects of his role must be evaluated. One includes his motivation and the other is what he wanted to accomplish. Malcolm X’s motivation was his oppressed youth. When Malcolm was younger he and his family were harassed by the Ku Klux Klan which caused them to move to another part of Michigan. Sadly enough, after they moved, the racism became worse. A racist mob set his family’s home on fire and all of the white emergency responders and firefighters watched their house burn down. Shortly after this, Malcolm X’s father died and this sent his mother into a deep depression of shock and grief which eventually caused her to be submitted into a mental institution. Malcolm left home and after leaving, he became involved in drugs and crime. This became his motivation. He wanted to fight back and provide young black youth with better and more positive opportunities. However, it was not just young black youth he was advocating for, but it was all African Americans. As an outspoken civil rights leader in the 1960s, Malcolm X wanted to encourage black power. He advocated Black Nationalism and separation form the white society.17 He argued that integration of blacks and white represented the succumbing of African Americans to white culture and values. African Americans needed to embrace their own culture and communities and be independent of the white world. Many people embraced the ideas of Malcolm X. Many people began to see what he was advocating as true. This served as a contributing factor to the rise of African American activism. Through his radical tactics and his self- defiant demeanor, he open many gates for African Americans and led them along the path of fighting back or taking a stand. Malcolm X wanted to better the lives of blacks and open their eyes to who they are and what being an African American stood for, pride and promise. The more people who started to realize this, the more people who took action. Needless to say, Malcolm X’s role as a leader and a civil right activist, played a significant role in causing rise in African American activism. E. Conclusion Malcolm X played a significant role in bringing rise to African American activism. Malcolm X shed light upon the many dreadful conditions faced by the people of African descent. However, while it may be impossible to measure his impact in its entirety, it is just to say that Malcolm X helped to expose unfair practices towards African Americans which ultimately led to significant changes, changes that the legal system deemed unlawful. This drive to better African Americans made Malcolm X an extraordinary leader and gave African American new incentive. This led African Americans to begin to take further action which gave rise to activists groups such as the Black Panther Party. It is evident that Malcolm X played a significant role in giving rise to African American activism. His role is equally as significant to that of Martin Luther King Jr. or even that of Rosa Parks. And while some may call him violent or racist, others consider Malcolm X to be one of the most influential and great est African Americans in history. Works Cited Eric Foner and John A. Mobile operators: Unlike the U.S. and Europe, mobile operators in Asia are absolutely crucial in being able to monetize services since smart phone and credit card penetration are relatively low. The most pervasive and easy way to do micro billing and transactions is via operators prepaid billing systems which have vast consumer reach. This is also a big source of growth for mobile operators, so there is a win-win in working with them. Customer general information- Customer feedbacks Customer general information Many businesses will want to keep track of their customers. They might want to store email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses because, for example, they want to tell customers about a new product or send them the annual catalog. A business may want to keep track of how much the customer has spent with the company or how many orders the customer has placed. Some companies may just work on an order-by-order basis, or have such few clients that a customer database is unnecessary. Customer feedbacks: Customer feedback is a great way to get ideas on how to improve your business. Environmental scanning is one of the basic segments of the worldwide natural investigation. Ecological observing, natural determining and natural appraisal finish the worldwide ecological investigation. The worldwide condition alludes to the full scale condition which includes ventures, markets, organizations, customers and contenders. Subsequently, there exist relating examinations on the small scale level. Providers, clients and contenders speaking to the miniaturized scale condition of an organization are broke down inside the business examination Undirected viewing Undirected viewing, a term first used by Aguilar (1967), takes place when environment to understand it. Information needs are ill-defined and fuzzy, and much of the information obtained is no routine or informal, usually gained through chance encounters. Since the environment is assumed to be unanalysable, the organization is satisfied with limited, soft information and does not seek comprehensive, hard data. Information seeking is thus casual and opportunistic, relying more on irregular contacts and casual information from external, people sources. Information use is concerned primarily with reducing the high levels of environmental equivocality. Conditioned viewing Conditioned viewing, again from Aguilar (1967), occurs when the organization perceives the environment to be analyzable but is passive about gathering information and influencing the environment. Information needs focus on a small number of relatively well-defined issues or areas of concern. These are often based on widely-accepted industry assumptions and norms. Information seeking makes use of standard procedures, typically employing internal, non-people sources, with a significant amount of data coming from external reports, databases, and sources that are highly respected and widely used in the industry. Enacting Enacting takes place when the organization perceives the environment to be unanalysable but then proceeds to intrude actively into the environment in order to influence events and outcomes. Information needs are those required for experimentation and testing the environment. This could involve identifying areas for fruitful intervention. Information seeking is from external sources and channels that the organization has created through its intervention and this may include feedback about the actions that the organization has taken. Searching Searching (labelled as Discovery in the original Daft and Wick paper) takes place when the organization perceives the environment to be analysable and it actively intrudes into the environment to collect an accurate set of facts about the environment. Information needs are based on well-defined search goals that are broad, detailed, and open-ended. The organization is prepared to be surprised by unexpected findings that reveal new information needs. Information seeking is for hard, formal, often quantitative data, typically from surveys, market research activities that are rigorous, objective. Q)8 Describe qualitative and quantative research and provide three ways research could conducted? Quantitative research Quantitative research is a more consistent and information drove approach which gives a measure of what individuals think from a factual and numerical perspective. For instance, on the off chance that you needed to know what number of your clients bolster a proposed change in your items or administration and how emphatically they bolster it. Qualitative Research Unlike quantitative research which relies on numbers and data, qualitative research is more focused on how people feel, what they think and why they make certain choices. Three ways research could be conducted: Research philosophy Research design Research approach Q)9 How could the Australian bureau of statistics assist with the research process? The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is Australians official measurable association. It helps and energizes educated basic leadership, research and exchange inside governments and the group, by giving a top notch, objective and responsive national factual administration. In the event that you cant discover the data you require from the ABS site, or require advance factual data you can get in touch with them by means of the ABS National Information and Referral Service (NIRS) which is a telephone data and referral administration, or Client Services. ABS prepared specialists can work with you to fulfill your measurable data needs. The ABS has workplaces in each State and Territory and contact subtle elements for these workplaces can be situated on the ABS site. Q)10 What is a business opportunity? Provide two examples listed below? A business opportunity (or religious administrator) includes deal or rent of any item, benefit, hardware, etc.that will empower the buyer licensee to start a business. The licensor or vender of a business opportunity more often than not pronounces that it will secure or help the purchaser in finding an appropriate area or give the item to the buyer licensee. This is not the same as the offer of an autonomous business, in which there is no proceeded with relationship required by the vender. Examples-Franchise Opportunities-Direct Sales Business Opportunities. Q)11 What is a business threat? Provide one example? Business dangers are quality benchmarks or determinations for your employment, items or administrations evolving? Is changing innovation undermining your position? Do you have terrible obligation or income issues? Could any of your shortcomings genuinely debilitate your business? A typical illustration: If you import merchandise for resale, then a negative move in return rates will drive up your expenses, in the event that you cant pass these expenses on to your clients, your edges will decrease. In this way, swapping scale instability could be a three. Q)12 What does the Pareto Principle mean? How could your business use the Perato Principle to grow market share of a product? The Pareto rule (otherwise called the 80-20 lead, the law of the indispensable few, and the guideline of component scantily) states that, for some occasions, about 80% of the impacts originate from 20%of the causes. Business-administration advisor Joseph M. Juan recommended the guideline and named it after Italian market analyst Vilfredo Pareto, who saw in 1906 that 80% of the land in Italy was possessed by 20% of the populace; he built up the standard by watching that 20% of the pea pods in his garden contained 80% of the peas. It is a typical general guideline in business; e.g., 80% of your business originate from 20% of your customers. Numerically, where something is shared among an adequately expansive arrangement of members, there must be a number k in the vicinity of 50 and 100 with the end goal that k% is taken by (100 à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ k) % of the members. The number k may change from 50 (on account of equivalent appropriation, i.e. 100% of the populace have rise to shares) t o about 100 (when a small number of members record for the majority of the asset). There is nothing uncommon about the number 80% scientifically, yet numerous genuine frameworks have k some place around this area of halfway lopsidedness in dissemination. The Pareto standard is just extraneously identified with Pareto effectiveness, which was likewise presented by a similar financial expert. Pareto created both ideas with regards to the dissemination of salary and riches among the populace. Q)13 True or False? As a result of increased competition, the lifespan of business opportunities in the marketplace is increasing-False The success of a new opportunity is always measured in terms of profit-False It is important that any new product or service is assessed at each stage of development process and should not proceed to the next stage until it has met the specified requirement-True if a number of new product or service ideas are developed, the ideas should be ranked against criteria to determine the best idea.-True Marketing information is available as software package-True Q)14 Describe how Ansoffs Matrix is used to develop new opportunities with range system of strategies? Diversification is the name given to the growth strategy where a business markets new products in new markets. This is an inherently more risk strategy because the business is moving into markets in which it has little or no experience. For a business to adopt a diversification strategy, therefore, it must have a clear idea about what it expects to gain from the strategy and an honest assessment of the risks. However, for the right balance between risk and reward, a marketing strategy of diversification can be highly rewarding. Q)15 Break-even Analysis: Calculate the break-even point for ice cream sales. Ice cream are bought for $2.00 each and sold for $2.50. The business has fixed costs of $400 per week? How many ice creams must be sold each week and therefore each day to break even Break even point= fixed cost/(selling price-variable cost) =400/(2.50-2.00) =400/0.50 =800 ice creams per week =114 per day.

A Violent Message in the Art of Popular Culture Essay -- Pop Culture R

A â€Å"Violent† Message in the Art of Popular Culture Many people believe that present-day music cause division, tension, and sometimes violence. However, it is acknowledged as art in popular culture. Art in popular culture revolves around action movies, television sitcoms, and provocative song lyrics, which have themes centered on explicit sexuality. Art in popular culture is embodied in music, dance, photography, and other artwork that embraces the ills of the world and acknowledges that they are appealing to the senses of people who live in a not so perfect world. Many critics say that popular culture is a product of generation X. A messed up group of people. What is wrong with popular culture? Why do the baby boomers regale this era of popular culture an era of madness? The answer is blatantly clear. Popular culture accepts the flaws of all its admirers and participants. For example, music in popular culture is generally deemed as negative. However, a positive consequence is that it has an international language and every one around the world can relate to what it communicates. Art in popular culture encompasses a common language, especially the art of music. This language rejects the sophisticated, civilized, intellectuals. For instance, popular culture inhibits the old, boring, classical music that operated out of the same musical dictionary and responded to the same chords. Whereas, music in popular culture rejects harmony as being important and values improvisation that breathes life-giving rhythm in non-structural chords. Music in popular culture is a genre distinct from both folk and classical music genres. According to The New Harvard Dictionary, it differed from the former being composed and notat... ...lent in this country. Some examples of Manson’s music, which can influence youth of today or could have taken the life of the young teenager previously mentioned are Dried Up, Tied Up and Dead to the World; Get Your Gun; Cake and Sodomy; Organ Grinder; Snake Eyes and Sissies; and etc. It is funny how rap and hip hop is essentially the only thing deemed violent, but popular culture stems from chaotic and violent factors. The two examples above can vouch for the previous statement. When looking at other outcomes of popular culture such as slasher movies with explicit sex scenes; talk shows that depicts American women as housewives or whores; or people like Monica Lewinsky who shows her bloomers to married men, popular culture music genres are just artistic expressions that mirror societal values in popular culture. Sometimes people do not like the reflection.

The Beginnings of Anorexia :: Health, Eating Disorder

Suicide is not the answer. Although, many people might think that a statement as simple as â€Å"suicide is the answer† is the core or the main point of the poem â€Å"Anorexic† by Eavan Boland. But, those that might think the suicide is the central point of the poem are extremely wrong, there is more about that poem than must people can understand, recognize, or want to accept. Boland wrote this poem in 1980 and until today still being one the most extraordinary poem in its simplicity but also very deep in its complicity. Consequently, if a person read the poem once without any background knowledge he or she will understand what the basic idea behind the poem is; however, if the same person read the poem one more time with more information about different topics. Background knowledge about what is Anorexia and the Christian Bible would help to clarify the speaker situations, feelings and decision of commit suicide. â€Å"Flesh is heretic† (line 1) the very first grammar structure of the poem lead us to the conclusion of a war. When the speaker says these words, she was sending a subliminal message saying that her flesh what is the same as her skin is heretic, which means one who rejects. So, it is safe to assume that she thinks her that her body contradicts her. Her body is her enemy. Furthermore, she hates her body. Instantly, she supports her theory with the second sentence in which she claim, â€Å"My body is a witch.† (2) In this sentence she compares her body to a witch. A witch is an evil been, a creature that wants to hurt, a scary creature that cast spells. In this comparison speaker imply that her own body wants to hurt her and when the speaker says â€Å"How she meshed my head in the half-truths† (7 - 8) is very important because in this particular part of the poem is when the speaker actually describe that the witch is casting spells on her, making her think that she is fat when it is not the actual truth. Now the speaker claims a contra attack when she claims, â€Å"Now the bitch is burning.† (15) She also refers to the way her body is reacting to the fight, â€Å"Yes I am torching - her curves and paps and wiles.† (4 - 5) this is the way of the speaker to say I am winning this fight, I am not eating and my hips, waist, and breast are just â€Å"skin and bone† (17).

Marijuana: Friend to the Dying :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics

Marijuana: Friend to the Dying Peter is an AIDS patient. The violent nausea caused by the handfuls of pills he must take every day prevents anything he eats from staying down. Even the pill to calm the vomiting won't stay in his stomach long enough to take effect. He has lost nearly forty pounds and is unrecognizable, even to himself. He has given up on life, and he dreads each day because of the pain and the sorrow it brings. Now imagine there's a drug that may help Peter, a drug that helps him keep food down or even makes him hungry, a drug that helps him gain weight, a drug that gives him the hope that he will live long enough to see a cure, a drug that helps him accept what's happening to his body. For Peter and many other patients, this drug is marijuana. Marijuana was first outlawed in the 1920's and 30's when tabloid magazines printed distorted reports of violent crimes committed by immigrants using marijuana which led to the "Marihuana Tax Act"("The Facts"). The two hearings held by Congress to debate the dangers of marijuana totaled no more than one hour with the American Medical Association (AMA) acting as the sole opponent to the bill. Arguments by the AMA were ignored, and misinformation and ignorance guided the House of Representatives as they approved the bill that remains today prohibiting the use of marijuana for any reason. Yet smoking marijuana has proved itself again and again through anecdotal evidence to be an effective treatment of extreme nausea in AIDS patients as well as in cancer patients (Conant 150). It also relieves some symptoms associated with glaucoma and multiple sclerosis ("The Facts"). The People of California and Arizona knew this when they voted for Proposition 215, which passed 55 to 45 percent, and Proposition 200, which passed 64 to 36 percent, respectively (Quayle pg 154). These propositions legalized marijuana for medical use in each of the two states. Also, between the years 1978 and 1996, thirty-four states passed laws acknowledging marijuana's medicinal capabilities ("The Facts"). It would seem that many Americans are seeing marijuana as a valuable tool in the medical field and that further research into the medical benefits of marijuana could only be an asset in the fight to ease the pain of the dying. Empathy in “To kill a mockingbird” Essay

Empathy is the ability to share in or understand other‘s emotions and feelings. It is the term of emotional understanding and a special skill for individuals. This skill requires people to look at things from other people’s views. According to Atticus Finch, ‘you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view†¦ until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.’ There are many circumstances in this novel where empathy towards others is demonstrated or learned by positive characters such as Atticus, Scout and Jem. Unlike Atticus who is probably one of the most empathetic characters throughout the whole novel, it takes certain experiences such as their dealings with Walter Cunningham and Mrs. Dubose for Scout and Jem to develop this unique quality. The first character, Atticus, shows empathy to many people throughout the story including Miss Caroline, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson. Atticus first shows empathy for M iss Caroline when Scout came home complaining about getting in trouble by her, â€Å"’ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view†¦until you climb into his skin and walk around in it’† (Chapter 3). This is One of the most important lessons Atticus teaches his children, which is that empathy should not be limited to people who seem nice on the outside. Atticus tells his children to use their imaginations, and feel what others feel before making a judgement. A Second example is Atticus’s empathy for Boo, which is developed after a long period of time of listening to people tell stories, which then gives him a bad reputation throughout the community. When Atticus realises that Scout, Jem, and Dill are playing a game about Boo’s life, he tells them to stop because he does not want the kids to believe what other people tell them all the time, they need to learn that not everything another person says is true. Throughout the novel Atticus proves to us what a respectful and empathetic man he is and also shows his strong beliefs towards racial equality which was an uncommon quality in a man during the 1930’s. A prime example of his empathy towards people suffering racism was when he agreed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man wrongfully accused of rapping a white girl. To Atticus, cheating a black man is the worst thing a white man can do â€Å"There’s nothing more sickening to me than a low-grade white man who’ll take advantage of a Negro’s ignorance†¦ whenever a white man does that to a black man†¦ the white man is trash.† (Chapter 23).
